Rural Electrification Agency
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is a Government institution formed in 2001 to facilitate the provision of electricity to rural areas in an equitable and sustainable manner. REA was birthed through the 1999 Electricity Act approved as a result of the Energy Sector Reforms. In accordance with the Electricity Act 1999, the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), the Rural Electrification Board (REB) and Rural Electrification Agency (REA) were established through Statutory Instrument no 75 of 2001, to support rural electrification programs. The purpose was to address the low level of electricity access in rural areas which was below 1% at the time.
